A newspaper article said this picture is believed to be the class of 1887 with their teacher Ed TURNER. However, it is likely the year might be off a few years. Photos is from Redmond School History Project.

Mrs. Anna McRedmond Smith recalled how her father, with five sons and two daughters to educate, got several families together and built a school for them on his property. Miss Mary Condon JACKLING, the first teacher in Redmond lived at the McRedmond home. Annq was among the first pupils in the log school house which her father built.  Source: Early days of Redmond: Told by the Daughter of it's Founder Seattle Times, issue June 5, 1949, Seattle Times

A later log schoolhouse was built in 1875, an indication that Redmond, along with Kirkland, is the Eastside's oldest community. The last term of school in the log school house pictured above was held in the fall of 1887. Because of the severity of the winter, the 1887 term lasted only six weeks.

Can you help identify people in the photo? From the left, back row, DeWhitt GRISWOLD is the second boy.  (Age estimates are based on the children's ages as reported in the June 1880 census.)

Front row, center are twins: Mabel PERRIGO, 7, is in the light color dress. You can see her hands. Mabel's twin brother, Arlington "Arlie" PERRIGO, 7, is standing to the right and little behind Mable. Boy with jacket with two buttons across and three buttons down to Mable's immediate left is Robert PERRIGO, 12,  the oldest of the four PERRIGO children in this photo. Marv PERRIGO, 10, is the little boy to the left of Robert.

A photograph of the Adam and Elizabeth TOSH family has five children including the girl in the second row, far left who appears to be Sarah TOSH. Sarah would be about 15 if this photo was taken in 1887. Other children in the TOSH family photo that resemble children in the school photo include the children in front of and to the right (Agnes - 8) of Sarah TOSH. Ages for the TOSH children based on June 1880 census include: Agnes TOSH, 8, Maggie TOSH, 11, Jenny TOSH, 13, Sarah TOSH, 15, Joe TOSH, 17 and Robert TOSH, 20. It seems likely that Maggie & Jenny TOSH are the two girls with similar dress & hair styles in the center of the photo. The boy in the back row, far left looks similar to a boy in the TOSH family photo. If so, the teacher is probably on the far right.

The other names I've seen listed for this picture (but not in order) are:

Boys:  Dave McREDMOND, 14 , Sam PERRY and Dave PERRY, 8, and Charles BROWN and William BROWN, 10 who became Redmond's Mayor from 1918-1948.

McREDMOND sisters:  Emma McREDMOND, 18, Annie McREDMOND, 16. The McREDMOND sisters are more likely in last row, 2nd & 3rd from the right. This guess is based on hairstyles in other pictures in the same time period.

Emma BROWN - I don't know her age, but it's likely she is the girl in the white skirt and black top.

Mary Condon JACKLING, who lived with the McREDMONDs, was the first teacher. She was followed by a Mr. HODGES, who taught in 1878 and 1879. Teachers through the 1880s were C. DUNLAP, Mrs. RIGHTSIE, Miss WITTENMEYER, M. WHITEHEAD, Vannie HAWLEY, Ed TURNER and Dora Adair.

In 1889, James MORSE McREDMOND  , Luke McREDMOND's stepson serving as a clerk of the School Board met Lydia DENYER, of Turner, OR at the train station. James and Lydia married in 1892. Lydia alternated teaching between Redmond and New Castle as they didn't have year round schools in those days.
